FAQ's

What will my hair be like when the hair extensions are removed?

Once you have had your extensions removed, your hair needs to be washed and conditioned to clean away any residue from the removal gel and bonds. If you have maintained your extensions well, there will be no damage, and you may find that your natural hair has grown more quickly than usual.

How long will my Great Lengths hair extensions last?

Great Lengths hair extensions full bonds can last up to five months if well maintained. Half bonds and micro bonds do not last as long. GL Apps tapes last about 4 weeks but can be re-used. Potential wear may be extended if specialist aftercare products are used.

How much will my Great Lengths hair extensions cost?

The cost of Great Lengths hair extensions is determined by the length of the hair required, the quantity of bonds, your colour choices, and the time required for application by your chosen stylist. The best way to get an accurate price for your desired look is to phone the salon for a consultation.

Will hair extensions damage my hair?

You can be assured that Great Lengths’ unique bonds have been scientifically proven not to cause damage to healthy hair when applied correctly and well maintained.

What do I need to do to look after my hair extensions?

Because all Great Lengths hair extensions are made from 100% human hair, your care routine will be very similar. The only key differences are that you may wash your hair less frequently, it must always be dried after washing, and the hair may need to be brushed more regularly.

Always follow the guidelines set out by your stylist, and take a look at our expert aftercare tips to maximise potential wear. Your stylist will also invite you to a free maintenance check approximately 3-4 weeks after application.

How are the hair extensions removed?

Great Lengths hair extensions must always be removed by a Great Lengths certified stylists. We will use a specially formulated Great Lengths removal gel. When applied, this gel gently breaks down the bond or softens the GL Apps tape-strip. For bonds, a removal tool is used alongside the gel, allowing the extensionist to slide the bond down your own hair with no damage caused.

How long does application take?

This depends on how many extensions you are having, and if you are having bonds or GL Apps applied. Your stylist will be able to advise you on estimated application time at your consultation.

Do I have to get a full head of hair extensions?

No. We can apply as few extensions as you need to achieve the look you want. Hair extensions can also just be applied to a specific area, such as at the sides. The possibilities are endless.

Are Great Lengths hair extensions suitable for everyone?

Hair extensions are a cosmetic procedure and should only be applied to healthy hair. Hair must be at least 5cm in length to ensure comfortable, discreet attachments. There are some medical conditions that may make a minority of clients unsuitable for extensions. Suitability is discussed during a consultation – these are always free and no-obligation.

Are Great Lengths hair extensions difficult to style?

Because Great Lengths extensions are 100% human hair, they can be treated in just the same way as your own hair –straightened, curled, permed and even coloured. However, we do recommend using the Great Lengths styling range of products to help keep your hair in tip top condition.

Do I have to use specialist aftercare products on my hair extensions?

It is not essential to use our specialist aftercare products on your hair extensions, however there are benefits in doing so. Featuring high quality cleansing and moisturising agents, the Great Lengths aftercare range is paraben-free and kind to hair and bonds, scientifically proven to extend potential wear by up to 20%.

What length does my hair need to be for hair extensions to be applied?

We recommend that hair is at least 5cm long, though ideally 8cm or longer. This allow the bonds to sit comfortably and be hidden.

Can I colour my hair extensions?

Yes, as our hair is 100% human, it can be coloured. However, the bonds can’t be coloured. Your stylist will be able to advise you on what is possible and what results you can expect to achieve.

Can I swim wearing hair extensions?

Yes, you can swim and exercise with hair extensions. We just advise that you spritz hair after exercising with our Anti-Tap Water. This product is designed to restore the natural PH balance of your hair and scalp, which can be altered by sweat. In turn, this protects bonds and nourishes hair.

How do I find out if my salon is Great Lengths certified?

You can use our Salon Locator to search for Great Lengths certified salons and stylists in your area, or you can search by name.

What is Remi / Remy hair?

Remi hair, often spelt ‘remy’, is hair where all the cuticles are facing in the same direction from root to tip. All Great Lengths hair is classed as remi. The main benefits are that the hair is easier to maintain, less likely to knot and blends well.

Are human hair extensions better, and why?

Great Lengths only uses 100% human hair because it behaves like your own hair and offers a more natural look. This means that our hair extensions can be styled using heated tools, as well as professionally coloured and permed. They are also suitable for most lifestyle activities including swimming.
